I am surprised to find a huge amount of negative commentary on atheist blogs on the “Through the Wormhole” series, most of it related to weaving the God concept into the introductory narrative. Given that the series is designed as an introduction to the current state of modern physics to the general viewing public, and since the general viewing public holds some form of God concept relative to cosmology, it’s a place to start, and does not indicate a Creationist theological agenda.
Religion surely emerges from the human cognitive algorithm that evolved over millions of years. The really interesting and productive work is to be done in figuring out religion’s evolutionary roots, and why we have it at all, from a cognitive perspective. Religion is probably a cognitive necessity, integral to what it is to be human, and as such religion will not be got rid of, but religion could be, and really must be, made compatible with imperial facts and our cognitively derived understanding of physics, the cosmos, evolutionary biology and the well-being of the human self. Many intellectuals have done exactly that, and they are not delusional.
The “Through the Wormhole” series is excellent as an introduction for the “lay person” unschooled in university physics, to the current state of modern physics and cosmology. I will vote with my check book by purchasing the entire series when it becomes available.
Where does the cosmos come from? This is still a valid question, and I really doubt that a grand unified theory will answer that question in the ultimate sense, and I'm cheering for the LHC team that is looking for the Higgs bozon. The reference to the God concept and the notion of a created universe in Wormhole is as lame, or sophisticated, as one would like to make it. The negativity of the atheist camp is only revealing its inner bias, and as such, the camp adds nothing new or innovative to the discouse on cosmology, nor to research into religion and cognition.
It is your right to believe as you so desire. Truth is in the eye & heart of the beholder.
If I die in error of judgment to find there is no God, i have lost nothing. You on their other hand if you die & err on the side to find that there is a Infinite Intelligent Creator, which you defiantly denied, you have wagered & lost infinitely more then can be recovered, your immortal soul.
